Dance Teaching
My teaching philosophy centres around continued participation and enjoyment. Through facilitating a positive, productive and safe environment, I aim to inspire dancers to bring their individuality and creativity to the studio. I combine contemporary dance artistry with my embodied knowledge of technique, fitness and conditioning to improve dance technique, prevent injuries and prolong participation.
Services
Technique Class
Either as a one off or series of technique classes for any age group or ability.
Starting off with a lively warmup, a flowing into well structured contemporary technique exercises. The class ends with a challenging performance phrase and unwinding cool down.
Community Project
For groups looking to be part of an exiting and collaborative creative process, where we work on a dance piece to be shared with friends and family.
Through dancing as a team, we will spotlight individual talents and have fun throughout the process.
Dance Science Workshop
For dance schools looking to share the basics of dance science with students. Through a practical workshop I introduce the basics of dance physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition.
My experience so far
I started my teaching journey at my dance school, 'Dancers' School of Dance' in the small seaside town of Lee-on-the-Solent where I was an assistant teacher for preschool age ballet, age 7-9 ballet and 10+ musical theatre. Since then, I have taught fun and energetic dance classes for pre-school age children at 'Get Set Play' in Portsmouth, and 'JC Sports' in Chichester.
As part of my undergraduate degree, I undertook a teaching dance and creative practice module for which I achieved a 1st. As part of this, I taught a choir local to me named 'The Lowry Girls' of fantastic ladies aged 60+ through online video call due to the coronavirus pandemic. We worked on fluidity of movement and performance skills using music from musicals and some ABBA classics. Also during lockdown, I taught online fitness classes for my peers and other dance students. Although online teaching was a challenge, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work on my ability to clearly describe movement and work with individual challenges.
I am looking forward to growing as a teacher and further developing my own style, which I have been doing through my Pedagogical Approaches module in my Dance MA, working on lesson plans and teaching my peers and different groups of dancers in the community.
